Although my NHS training and experience has equipped me to work with children and young people who have severe mental health difficulties, I also work with children who have mild or moderate emotional difficulties.
-
Many of the children I have worked with have had a diagnosis of ASD and/or ADHD alongside mental health difficulties.
-
There are limited before and after school sessions available. In my experience schools are usually supportive of integrating sessions into the child’s school day and it does not affect the child’s attendance record.
-
I offer an initial free 15 minute telephone consultation to discuss your concerns and to consider whether it would be worthwhile to meet for an in-person consultation - which is an introductory meeting to explore the difficulties the child or young person is having further. After this, I typically offer 3 assessment sessions followed by a review meeting in which we would think together about whether it would be helpful to start psychotherapy.
-
I offer sessions for parents to think about their child's difficulties and how best to support them. Children can be reluctant to join appointments at first but they often relax and become more willing to continue as time goes on.
-
Children don’t need to communicate verbally during sessions. I am trained and experienced in helping children express themselves when it’s hard to find the words.
-
For some children a brief intervention (a handful of sessions) is enough to resolve the problem, whilst others will need a longer piece of work (a year or more) to get to the route of the difficulty. The length of the treatment will be discussed and agreed upon before the start of a treatment and then reviewed every term after that.
-
The first consultation is usually a joint session in which I will meet with both parents and children (for under 18s). It is a chance to get to know each other and understand what brings them here.
For younger children, I will invite parents to stay for the entire session, as this can help the child to feel secure. For teenagers or older children, after an initial introduction together, I might suggest some time to talk with them alone.
My approach is flexible with an emphasis on what feels most comfortable for everyone.

Yes, I can offer online appointments if this is suitable for the child or young person’s treatment.
-
As a psychotherapist, I don’t prescribe medication. However, I can work with medical professionals as part of a balanced treatment plan.
-
If I think it could be helpful, I offer work with the family as a whole or joint sessions with parents and children/young people.

Before a therapy treatment starts, I offer an initial free 15 minute phone consultation, followed by an in-person consultation, a 3 session assessment and a review meeting, so there is time for us to make a decision together about whether it would be helpful to continue. After therapy starts I offer review meetings to consider the progress of the therapy.
